Lost & Found

A year or so ago, my friend David found a really touching inscription inside of a great NPR book that he picked up at a used bookstore. It was amazingly heart-felt and honest, this inscription from a son to a father. When we read it, we were of course very moved, and then we thought, "Oh no, I bet the father was ill, passed away, and someone just traded or gave the book away. How sad." And then it made us wonder how many other inscribed books are just sitting around waiting to be read and pondered? Well, we started searching for them in earnest a little while ago, scouring used bookshops, antique/thrift stores and the like. We're amazed at how many we've found so far!

The following posts contain a variety of books and inscriptions, and we’ll keep updating as the quest continues. Please have a look through them. I encourage you to share your own thoughts about them. And if you have found some inscriptions of your own, by all means, click here and share them! I’d love to be able to include them!

Thanks!

A simple and elegant little whisp of an inscription, fitting for what David (owner of hundreds of Williams Sonoma cookbooks) says is a very simple and elegant little hors d’oeuvre cookbook.

Yet another cookbook with a great inscription from the author, but here’s a twist: This one was found in David’s own collection. He didn’t even realize it had an inscription until he opened it up one day to find a recipe for some comforting Irish stew. If you’re a collector of used books, you may have inherited some unnoticed inscriptions, too.

I hope that the “Grandmommie & Papa” mentioned in the inscription felt the same as this reviewer – “[This book] helps people to discover a feeling that makes our life better. Joan Walsh Anglund employed children’s pictures and thoughts to prove that love can be felt by all the ages .” Amazon informs us that Ms. Anglund published 95 books, selling over 45 million copies.

OK, we’re sort of breaking our rule by including an author inscription that’s not really personal, but since it’s a book about Harper Lee (and since Donna Quixote is rather a Mockingbird fanatic), we’re hoping you’ll understand. This is supposed to be a pretty well-researched bio.
