Lost & Found

A year or so ago, my friend David found a really touching inscription inside of a great NPR book that he picked up at a used bookstore. It was amazingly heart-felt and honest, this inscription from a son to a father. When we read it, we were of course very moved, and then we thought, "Oh no, I bet the father was ill, passed away, and someone just traded or gave the book away. How sad." And then it made us wonder how many other inscribed books are just sitting around waiting to be read and pondered? Well, we started searching for them in earnest a little while ago, scouring used bookshops, antique/thrift stores and the like. We're amazed at how many we've found so far!

The following posts contain a variety of books and inscriptions, and we’ll keep updating as the quest continues. Please have a look through them. I encourage you to share your own thoughts about them. And if you have found some inscriptions of your own, by all means, click here and share them! I’d love to be able to include them!

Thanks!

Wee Gillis by Monroe Leaf

Wee Gillis by Monroe Leaf
Wee Gillis by Monroe Leaf

Does the name Monroe Leaf ring a bell? How about a bull named Ferdinand? That’s right, Monroe Leaf wrote The Story of Ferdinand. He also wrote, among many others, our book pictured here, Wee Gillis. Which was cited as a 1939 Caldecott Honor Book, and is about a boy living in Scotland halfway between his father’s family in the Highlands and his mother’s in the Lowlands. I find the cover very trippy, in its way.

And the inscription is cute as well!

So says this book’s discoverer, David: Just like the inscription found within, I found this book very hard to read. 🙂

I might have found it hard to read, as well, had I ever endeavored to try.

Runyon A La Carte by Damon Runyon

Runyon coverFirst published in 1933, this is a collection of twelve of Damon Runyon’s “most hilarious stories”. You can’t judge a book by its cover, right? Wrong. Look at the no cover book photo on the left. Boring. Now look at the cover on the right. Looks like a lot of fun and frivolity was just waiting between the pages!

It was great finding a well-preserved first edition of this novel (albeit without a cover), and it was an even greater find when we discovered the inscription!
