Lost & Found

A year or so ago, my friend David found a really touching inscription inside of a great NPR book that he picked up at a used bookstore. It was amazingly heart-felt and honest, this inscription from a son to a father. When we read it, we were of course very moved, and then we thought, "Oh no, I bet the father was ill, passed away, and someone just traded or gave the book away. How sad." And then it made us wonder how many other inscribed books are just sitting around waiting to be read and pondered? Well, we started searching for them in earnest a little while ago, scouring used bookshops, antique/thrift stores and the like. We're amazed at how many we've found so far!

The following posts contain a variety of books and inscriptions, and we’ll keep updating as the quest continues. Please have a look through them. I encourage you to share your own thoughts about them. And if you have found some inscriptions of your own, by all means, click here and share them! I’d love to be able to include them!

Thanks!

Williams-Sonoma, Roasting

Williams-Sonoma, Roasting

We’re discovering more and more that if you want to find inscriptions within contemporary books, you head for the cookbook section of any used bookstore.

This one was found within seconds of our arrival. Apparently, Catherine’s Mom wanted her to get her roasting on. Does it bother anyone else that she writes out Mother instead of Mom? Seems kind of cold and haughty.

Extra! Extra! by Henry Justin Smith
Extra! Extra! by Henry Justin Smith

Haven’t been able to find out anything about his book apart from the fact that the author himself, Henry Justin Smith, was managing editor of the Chicago Daily News at one point. So obviously this book (did the title give it away?) has something to do with the newspaper business. What is equally interesting is this book appears to be a signed and numbered limited edition of only 2000 copies.

David and his daughter found this neat book at the Brentwood, Tennessee library. They rarely miss the quarterly sale.

First Steps for Little Feet by Charles Foster
First Steps for Little Feet by Charles Foster

Once again our (“our” being, in this case, David’s) meticulous and brief research has yielded some interesting results. Namely that the book was written back in 1855 and republished thereafter, almost always with the title the  First Steps for Little Feet in Gospel Paths. You’ll notice that the book we found and pictured here has omitted the end of the title – in Gospel Paths. One wonders why, and also why the book wasn’t gifted until 1936. But only briefly, and then one has some more coffee and flits away to another book cover.

Tales from Silver Lands, by Charles J. Finger
Tales from Silver Lands, by Charles J. Finger

You know, besides finding old books and inscriptions, it’s really enjoyable when you find out some interesting tidbits about a book. Like the book we feature here – it’s a Newbery Medal* winner! How cool is that? It won back in 1925! I wonder if Donald’s Daddy knew that when he gave it to him?
