Lost & Found

A year or so ago, my friend David found a really touching inscription inside of a great NPR book that he picked up at a used bookstore. It was amazingly heart-felt and honest, this inscription from a son to a father. When we read it, we were of course very moved, and then we thought, "Oh no, I bet the father was ill, passed away, and someone just traded or gave the book away. How sad." And then it made us wonder how many other inscribed books are just sitting around waiting to be read and pondered? Well, we started searching for them in earnest a little while ago, scouring used bookshops, antique/thrift stores and the like. We're amazed at how many we've found so far!

The following posts contain a variety of books and inscriptions, and we’ll keep updating as the quest continues. Please have a look through them. I encourage you to share your own thoughts about them. And if you have found some inscriptions of your own, by all means, click here and share them! I’d love to be able to include them!

Thanks!

Damned to Glory by Robert Lee Scott

Damned to Glory by Robert Lee Scott
Damned to Glory by Robert Lee Scott

Does the name seem a bit familiar for some reason? Well perhaps it should! Robert Lee Scott was a Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force. He is best known for his autobiography God is My Co-Pilot, which (according to David’s research) was about his exploits in World War II with the Flying Tigers. Damned to Glory was his second book and was a story about “air power in the far east during WWII and those who flew the missions.”

You don’t have to be crazy to believe this stuff, but damn, it sure would help, because some of this shit is just nuts.

Five Minutes a Day
Five Minutes a Day

When’s the last time you gave a Christmas present to your doctor? And what kind of book is “Five Minutes a Day” that you would gift it to your doctor? As you might surmise, we didn’t look through it to find out. Mores the pity, ’cause then we might’ve had a wittier way to wrap up this bit of textual fluff.

Inveighing We Will Go Hardcover by William F. Buckley Jr.

Inveighing We Will Go Hardcover by William F. Buckley Jr.
Inveighing We Will Go Hardcover by William F. Buckley Jr

Who doesn’t enjoy a good inveighing? And in the late ’60s and the ’70s, William F. Buckley had to be in the top 10 of erudite grumblers. Deciphering his railings against liberalism is best done with a dictionary in one hand and a stiff drink in the other, but there’s no doubt he’s beyond witty (if patrician to the point of parody). As a side note, the debates between Buckley and equally pompous pompous Gore Vidal in Best of Enemies made for fascinating, if ultimately rather sad, viewing….

Oh, yeah, back to the inscription: Nothing particularly interesting, but we couldn’t resist the book. It was one of many books presumably donated by the heirs of Sunny.
