Lost & Found

A year or so ago, my friend David found a really touching inscription inside of a great NPR book that he picked up at a used bookstore. It was amazingly heart-felt and honest, this inscription from a son to a father. When we read it, we were of course very moved, and then we thought, "Oh no, I bet the father was ill, passed away, and someone just traded or gave the book away. How sad." And then it made us wonder how many other inscribed books are just sitting around waiting to be read and pondered? Well, we started searching for them in earnest a little while ago, scouring used bookshops, antique/thrift stores and the like. We're amazed at how many we've found so far!

The following posts contain a variety of books and inscriptions, and we’ll keep updating as the quest continues. Please have a look through them. I encourage you to share your own thoughts about them. And if you have found some inscriptions of your own, by all means, click here and share them! I’d love to be able to include them!

Thanks!

David and I laughed so loud when we saw this people looked at us like we’d lost our collective minds. (Come to think of it, that’s not the first time.) BUT. Look at where the inscription…was. Look at all of that WHITE OUT. Holy Crap – that’s some kinda happily ever after right there. The fact that someone took the time to do that (David says that it obviously was the bride’s work, that the groom would’ve just chucked it in the trash) and THEN got rid of the book; speaks oodles to the level of enmity that must’ve, um, eaten these two up. Yikes.

Hands-down, this is the best bit of student doodling we’ve found inside a book. Ever. The misspelled words add charm to the unambiguous way in which the student shares his or her feeling about the book.

The book in question was written in 1945 and designed to be a part of a home economics class. With any luck, this student failed the class and enjoyed a lifetime of fun, frivolity and facetiousness!

Mama D was quite a woman. In doing some research for this little write-up, we came across her obituary in the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. What a lovely testament to a woman who “fed a generation of University of Minnesota students, Tony Bennett’s band and the poor and homeless.” Amazing lady!

The Power Bright and Shining: Images of my Country by Rod McKuen

Singer-songwriter and poet Rod McKuen signed a copy of this book in 1980 for (at the time) Nevada Governor Robert List. Rod is credited with writing and publishing over 1,500 songs, writing scores of poems and as I write this, I can’t remember a single one. I don’t know if that’s sad, or just telling…or both.
